Hunger Games to Increase a Hunger for Learning

My students need 80 copies of "The Hunger Games" novel to motivate and encourage reading skills.

My Students

Have you ever felt defeated before ever starting an assignment? That is how most of my tenth grade students feel when it comes to reading. But for them, the act of reading does not have to feel so daunting. They need to meet the character Katniss.

My students come from a low poverty area in Louisiana.

Most of my students, though bright, come into the class at a lower knowledge level then expected. The school itself has gone through various transitions over the years and those transitions have affected the students in a poor way. Most the surrounding schools have been consolidated into my school. This change disrupts the learning process because there is a lack of consistency. The district that the school is located in also lacks money for the proper resources to give to our students. We do not have money to provide novels, or basic school supplies to our students. Many of the students attending do not even own a computer. My students are so enjoyable to be around and I would like to able to provide them with an education that encourages confidence. If they can find that confidence through a book they read, I will count that as a success.

My Project

Most of my students will never leave the small town in which they live. My hope in offering this book to my students is that they will be able to broaden their worldview. Not only do I want my students to broaden their worldview, but I want to foster a love for reading. Offering a book that is interesting to them can create a sense of learning that is fun. These resources will increase comprehension skills, vocabulary development, reading and writing fluency, and knowledge on how different governments work. This book will stretch their creative and critical thinking skills. My students will learn how to relate literature to their life, to value to the written word, compare and contrast skills, characterization, theme, tone, mood. All of these things will help them in their end of course test.

My students are under the impression that learning is boring and useless.

They do not see the value of reading. I fear that if I do not provide my students with a text that they enjoy then I will lose their drive to learn English Lit. completely. I can only offer this opportunity with your help.
