My Students

Do you remember what it was like the first time you read a book that you couldn't put down? My students haven't discovered books that capture their imaginations in the same way, so I hope this will begin a life long thirst for reading.

My students are energetic, enthusiastic, and eager to learn.

My goal as a teacher is meeting their needs. They are 7th graders at our Academy of Science and Engineering. They are the Innovators, learning to be creative and solve problems on their own.

My Project

Reading for pleasure is an intensely personal activity. Most of my students have yet to experience the connection that is necessary with a book to retain a life long love of reading. My students will learn the standards necessary to pass their end of year exams, but they will also learn to think critically. They will learn to put themselves in the shoes of characters, such as Katniss, who will do anything to protect her family, or analyze how they would react if they were stranded on an island with no adults around. They will build their critical thinking skills and their reading comprehension so they can become better students in the future.

Reading is a fundamental skill that affects every aspect of a student's life.

It is a foundational skill necessary for the improvement in other subjects. But reading can also be fun. It's closely tied to the thirst for knowledge. Reading can change a student's life, when given the proper book at an appropriate level.
