Build a Strong Math Foundation While Making Sense of Numbers

My students need new math manipulatives that will enhance their understanding of numbers and numerals. They need 3 sets of counters, a magnet board and linking monkeys.

My Students

Imagine being able to harness the natural curiosity of a five or six year old and apply that to giving them a strong foundation of number sense that will allow them to tackle all other mathematical concepts and ideas they will encounter throughout their school career.

My class consists of 18 kindergarten students.

There are many varying ability levels and learning styles in our room. My students are extremely active and interested in their world. Most of them have been raised in the country. A few of our class members are bused from a nearby town. Our school houses students Pre-K through 8th grade in a rural village. We are considered a Title I school. These materials will also be shared with another kindergarten class.

My Project

I know that my students will gain a better understanding of math concepts and number sense when they have opportunities to tap into multiple learning styles. Most of my students are tactile learners. One way to make sure they gain this mathematical understanding is by providing them with many varied opportunities to work with mathematical manipulatives. I have requested dinosaur counters, size & color bug counters, and kid counters that will offer a variety of items for my students to compare/contrast, sort, and match. A magnetic numerals set will be used by the students to show written understanding of basic mathematical operations. The count and link manipulative will allow students to practice matching sets to numerals. The linking monkeys will allow students to practice counting and recognizing numerals and numeric order. With these opportunities, I will be ensuring that my students have the ability to transfer information they acquire from one skill to another.

Please support this project so I can better help my students take ownership of their learning through the use of various materials that will allow my class more opportunities to work with numerals and sets of items.

When children take ownership of their learning, they will better retain and improve the math skills that are the foundation for their future classes.
