My Students

Motionless...that's how some of my elementary students respond to music. They don't know how to move expressively with the music or have a low-level of body awareness - they may think they are moving when they really are not...BUT, put a colorful scarf in their hands and they will move all over!

My campus has a very diverse population of students.

They hail from literally all over the world with some 57 countries and 37 languages represented by students in our ESL program! They all work hard and perform well on our Texas state exams, which speaks volumes for their work ethic since for many English is their second language. As many take private music lessons as play sports and they all genuinely love music.

My Project

While my many of my students are learning to play piano, violin, guitar, or even drums by taking private lessons, many of them are challenged to move expressively with music. Young children learn best by doing, and so moving with music to show its patterns and feelings allows them to better understand the musical piece as a whole. Many, however, are reluctant to move. Even with my modeling for them, some still have a hard time following and performing movement. The scarves, wands, and parachutes I've requested will give all the students an extension of themselves to move. It will allow them to release inhibitions and move more freely. They will learn to internalize the beat - the basic building block of music - and will understand the patterns in music more fully. With the bells I've requested, the young students who might have trouble sitting in front of a full xylophone and finding the right note to play, will be able to look at one letter on one note and play at the right time.

It is important to me that all my students are successful in expressing and making music.

What I've requested in this project, which I've named "Wonderful Whimsical Musical Day" will allow them to have just that...day after day of wonderful music making - with beautiful sounding bells to create lovely music and colorful scarves/wands/parachute to create expressive, even whimsical, musical movement. Every child will be given the opportunity to use the items and increase their musical enjoyment.
