My Students
Hearing good examples of literature and fluent reading expands your vocabulary, builds stamina and helps you become a better reader.-The Sisters (Gail Boushey & Joan Moser)
My kids are amazing.
My students are Texas first graders that are just beginning to develop a love of books! They beg to get their little hands on new material! They will rush to complete an assignment so that they can race to our bookshelf to get a book. It's wonderful to watch. One of the most amazing things to see is our library time. EVERYONE is excited! I hear them ask the librarian..."Can you show me the biographies?" or "Which shelf has fables?" I can't help but smile. Our school is in the heart of a small but growing community of working class parents. Both the parents and kids work hard and are wonderful. The best thing our campus can provide for this demographic of students is exposure. The majority of these students have not been out of the state, seen a museum, or even been to a zoo. I feel the responsibility of exposing these kiddos to rich classroom materials and technology.
My Project
In my classroom, students participate in The Daily 5. The five components of The Daily 5 are Read to Self, Read To Someone, Listen to Reading, Work on Words, and Work on Writing. This project will focus on the task of Listening to Reading. The supplies in this project will allow multiple students to listen to stories read to them by CD while looking at the book. Listening to reading will allow students to be exposed to higher level vocabulary, as well as, increase their fluency by hearing the way a fluent reader sounds. But most of all, listening to someone read and tell a story is just plain fun! The Leapster component to this project will allow students higher engagement through listening to interactive books as well as educational software. Both the listening supplies and LeapPad will be used daily!!
My donors have already been so supportive by giving me a jump start to the Daily 5 by providing books for my classroom library.
This project is the next step to implementing The Daily 5 to it's fullest potential. At this point, I have approximately 4-5 students huddled around 1 CD player trying to hear the CD while the rest of the class is busy at work. It's just not the ideal scenario. This listening center project will allow each student to have their own set of headphones to hear the reading.
