Biology Students Studying Bay Ecology from a Canoe

My students need funding for a canoeing trip. We are studying bay ecology and conservation.

My Students

Over the years we have experienced the beauty and wonder of our local marine environment from a canoe. The previous funding source has been eliminated due to tough economic times. We would like to continue this unique, and for some, once in a life time experience.

We live next to one of the most spectacular bays in the world.

Many of my students who live in this urban setting have never been on a boat or out on the bay. Taking students canoeing for many of them is an experience that they never forget and can be fundamental in shaping their ideas about the environment in which they live. This experience helps them to see the beauty that surrounds them and helps them connect to the natural world. Floating in a canoe on the water, students gain an entirely new perspective of their world and the natural beauty that is literally right in their back yard.

My Project

While canoeing on the bay students will be able to experience their world in an entirely new way. On land or even right next to the water the bay may seem lifeless and cold. Experiencing this environment from a canoe the bay comes alive. We see pelicans gliding over the water and can experience the world as a pelican does. We experience the wind and the waves as a dynamic force. The organisms that live beneath the waves become apparent as we see the tips of bat rays emerging above the water and small fish skimming the surface. Young people are more likely to care about the natural environment if they have a personal relationship with it. This canoeing experience can be a formative experience in this relationship with the natural world.

Our school is a 6th grade through 12th grade school.

We have taken students canoeing for the past seven years. This is an experience that they all share. Students look forward to this experience and learn bay ecology, bay conservation, and become more confident in their abilities having conquered canoeing in the bay.
