Who Needs To Know How To Measure?

My students need learning centers and test taking strategies in math to complete individually or with a partner to help increase their math success

My Students

Who likes to open their math book and do math problems for 45 minutes? I know that I don't and neither does my students.

I teach third grade in a rural, high poverty town in South Carolina.

My class averages around 20 students, which is a mixture of African Americans and Caucasians. Our school is only two in the state where we teach from K-4 to 12th grade in one school. Our students are from many broken homes where their parents cannot provide what they need to help their kids learn to the fullest, and besides math is a lot different that it was when we were in school.

My Project

This year my plan is to teach math workshop for measurement. This is a lot like reading workshop in which the students will be actively involved in math for 45 minutes, however, they will be learning in groups not as a whole group. For math workshop, the students are placed in 3 different groups that rotate every 15 minutes. The three groups are: teacher, independent practice, and games. I currently do not have a lot of math games that are appropriate for my students due to their low level of learning. I need to start with the basics with some of my students and others are learning in mid-4th grade level. I know that math teaching is constantly changing, and I want to stay with the fast-paced world of learning. With the math resources that I am requesting, I will be able to reach all of my students, no matter their level. After our state testing last year, I also found out that measurement is the weakness for all of our 3rd grade classes at our school and test taking skills are a must.

Math is a subject that either you love or you hate, usually their is no in-between.

I want my students to love math because they are good at it and it is fun. By providing math games that are fun and educational, I hope to reach this goal. Also, 3rd grade is the first time that students are completing the state test, and I want them to feel confident in their answers.
