Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

First, I have to start off by saying thank you for your generosity and this great opportunity. You all are LIFE SAVERS. In simple terms, I just want to create an environment which simulates an aspect of the digital world for my students.

I teach in a NYC Public School.

My students are second graders. They are a very diverse bunch of kids. Almost half of my class consists of English Language Learners. We have been dealing with low funds and school budget cuts for some time now. We are a Title 1 school in dire need of big school improvements.

My Project

We don't have the necessary monetary funds to provide all of the children with a laptop of their own. However, I believe having one laptop in the classroom would be inspiring for the kids. The children don't have any access to computers at all. There were countless moments where having access to a laptop would have been beneficial for the students, from looking up words to engaging them in interactive learning on-line. In Science last month, we were doing a Unit Study on Rocks. I was telling my kids about a wonderful interactive website that showed The Rock Cycle. I had explained the Rock Cycle to them, but the students would have gotten more out of it if they had seen it with their own eyes, especially since I'm dealing with a lot of English Language Learners. In Writing, we were working on creating Information Books. Part of the Unit invites students to research topics, but the majority of my students don't have access to a computer at home, especially at school.

Donations to this request will make a world of a difference.

I think the most important factor when it comes to the students is that they develop through this process greater ownership and responsibility in their learning which results in greater self-confidence in their academic capabilities. I believe the laptops will empower my students in ways no other 'tool' has been able to.
