Discovering Our Alaska Through Reading and Science

My students need science materials that will help them acquire knowledge of how science relates to them through new colorful books, test kits, and other hands-on exploration.

My Students

Have you ever found yourself reading a textbook and wanted to just go outside and figure it out yourself? This is the desire of all of my students. In order to fulfill this desire we need science supplies that correlate with our textbook, so we can make the book "come alive".

Living in rural bush Alaska and being Native Alaskan my students have a wonderful opportunity to be surrounded by nature and discover the science right in front of them.

They walk to school everyday and have little knowledge of what is beneath their feet and above their head. I want my students to be able to understand their environment, culture, and how to protect both.

My Project

I am requesting science materials that deal primarily with environmental science and astronomy. My desire is to show the student firsthand how plants grow, since we live in a permafrost environment that does not allow for outdoor growth. We will also be able to use the supplies to take soil samples and discover more about the erosion that is causing our village to shrink (parts of our boardwalk had to be move since the river eroded the ground beneath it). I would also like to capitalize on the dark days we currently have by showing the students the stars and having them be able to relate them to what they are reading. I am hoping that these hands-on projects will help students become inspired to discover how they can help the village and protect what is around them.

These donations will make a huge difference on how my students will learn science.

By donating you will be helping my students step away from a textbook and into nature to discover the science all around them. My hope is that the students will not only discover what is around them, but take it a step further and encourage their families and neighbors to help preserve it. This ties together their academic life and their home life, creating a learning experience for the whole family.
