My students need a set of binoculars, two birds field guide and a digital camera so that they can create a local field guide for our schools outdoor classroom.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Are we going outside today? No I am not a P.E. teacher, I am a science teacher; however, any chance I get to take my students outside to learn science is well worth it. My student love outdoor learning and now I want them use these outdoor experiences to read, write and collaborate like scientists.
My school, a Pre K - 8th grade school, is one of the highest poverty schools in my school district.
I teach science to fifth and sixth graders. My students participate in a variety of student-centered hands-on activities. Too many of my students are at risk of performing below grade level across subject areas. I am committed to closing the achievement gap for my students. To accomplish this, I offer students an enriched learning environment by integrating science into other subject areas and teaching students to use digital tools to enhance their science learning.
My Project
Tucked in the back of the schoolyard lies a hidden treasure. I often take my students out there to learn science. It is a place I want to invite other teachers to share with students. This project will make this happen by making it possible for my students to create a local field guide for our schoolyard. I am requesting funds to purchase two field guides on Eastern birds, binoculars, and digital camera. Students will use these tools to document their fieldwork. In the classroom, they will use this research to create a field guide to share with peers and teachers across grade levels. What is powerful about this project? It is long term and ongoing. Students will repeat the activity as often as possible to determine changes over time and develop a body of data. Other groups of students will be responsible for making field guides for other animals and plants present on our schoolyard.
This project will offer my students multiple opportunities to integrate science across disciplines and invite students throughout the school to enjoy and learn from nature present on our schoolyard.
Providing my students an opportunity to survey our schoolyard and to create a local field guide, is one of the many ways I am trying to offer my students an enriched learning environment. With your help I can continue to make learning come alive in my class.
