Hands On Wooden Puzzles

My students need wooden puzzles because most have never seen them or worked them and these puzzles help develop many early developmental skills.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Think back to your childhood and remember the hours spent working on wooden puzzles: turning the puzzles to try and fit them in the proper space to make the complete picture. I brought out one of my own children's wooden puzzles one day and a student asked me, "What is that thing?"

My students live in a rural area but the school district is part of a large urban district.

Many rarely leave their small town so experiences are limited. Like most students, mine get excited when they learn something knew and coming to school is a fun experience. Our classroom is bright, energetic, and fun. I try to bring experiences into the classroom that my students would not otherwise have. I was surprised at the number of students who had never seen or worked a wooden puzzle. These students had great difficulty trying to figure out where each piece of a puzzle went--working puzzles is fun and many skills can be taught through this activity. My students are eager to learn, help each other, and leave school daily with a smile on their face. We shake each other's hands and I thank them for "learning with me" each day. The feeling of mutual respect we have for each other is what makes each child understand that their efforts are appreciated.

My Project

I was amazed the day at the beginning of the year when I brought out a couple of my own children' puzzles (both are in college)and some of my kindergarten students asked me, "What is that?" I looked around and then realized that they meant the two wooden puzzles I had put on the desk. Acquainting my students with these learning activities will allow them to experience some of the fun my own children had and I had as a child when the pieces all fit to make the puzzle picture. Working puzzles teaches skills such as problem-solving, part-to-whole, and fine-motor skill development. This type of hands-on activity is far more valuable than a worksheet because students become actively engaged in their learning. The puzzles I selected include ones that will help with alphabet recognition and sequencing and science concepts. Others can be used as talking points to develop comprehension skills-tell me what's happening in this picture.

These puzzles will help my current students, those in other classrooms, and those in the future as they are items that can be used for years.

As young students become more and more technological savvy, we sometimes forget that the learning activities of yesteryear still have a valuable place in education. I am sure that most donors can recall sitting on the floor working wooden puzzles when they were a child. Please help me bring those times to students who have never experienced them before.
