My Students

Metacognition is the awareness and understanding of yourself as a thinker. Expert problem-solvers, and effective thinkers of all kinds are usually self-aware thinkers.

Teachers can promote awareness of strategies for thinking by engaging their students in activities that require reflection.

Students can keep and share a "process log" where they write about the processes they employ in reading, writing, and math. My fabulous first grade students are always thinking but often lack the executive skills to recall the information they have learned.

My Project

My students need a digital camera and memory cards to document their understanding of concepts and skills. Our plan is to use the camera and cards to create a visual metacognition timeline where the students can review and recall the information they have learned by looking at the pictures we have taken throughout the year. Students and the teacher will both be involved in taking pictures of the various learning activities that are happening each and every day in the classroom.

This project would create more than memories.

Students would be creating a shared meaning. The meaning would be deeply personal by involving themselves in the pictures. The photos will hang on the classroom wall for parents, volunteers, and staff to see as well as the students to reference.
