Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our senses tell us what is happening around us and can warn us about dangers. They help us communicate. Light and sound carry information. Both travel as waves. Our students need as much hands-on experience studying waves to make the best informed decisions in the future as possible.

Our school is a public urban school with about 2,100 students.

They come mainly from low income families. Seventy percent of our students are on the Federal Meal Assistance program and are bussed to school from the inner city. Many of our students are English second language learners. They cannot stay after school because they must take the bus home. The students are eager learners. Some are so motivated that they spend their Saturdays at a nearby university designing experiments, constructing apparatus and collecting data on plasmas (the fourth state of matter) in a voluntary no credit situation. For many students, this physics class will be their last opportunity to learn physics and about waves in a free formal guided setting. This experience gives them a structure for their knowledge base which they can build on the future.

My Project

I want my students to create periodic waves with the electromechanical wave maker while changing properties of the material that the wave is passing through. Students will be in groups. They will change the length, the mass, the tension on the string that is carrying the waves. They will measure the wavelength, period, frequency and speed of the waves as they travel through the string. Finally they will graph properties of the wave versus time, distance or position. They will be able to explore as a group different types of strings, the nature of wave resonance, and the effect of tension on a string that has a wave going through it. With the sound level meter, students will be able to put a number to different intensity levels of sound and become aware of sound levels that can be destructive to their hearing. They will also go to different places on the campus and collect sound data and make a sound map of our campus which will be posted as a Google map for comparison later classes.

Both sound and light have wave properties.

It is much better to be able to see and feel wave properties than to read about them in books or in a video. My students will retain more knowledge through a kinesthetic hands-on experience. For many of our students this physics class will be their last opportunity to learn physics and waves in a free formal guided setting. This experience gives them a structured knowledge base which they can build on the future and be better informed citizens.
