My Students

According to the Center of Disease Control and Prevention, 17% of children and adolescents in America are obese. By the time these children become adults, more than 33% of them will be obese. Even worse, in California, amongst low-income populations, the data is even more frightening.

I teach 25, incredibly enthusiastic first graders, who all qualify for free and reduced lunch.

They love school, and they love learning. Unfortunately, because of their environment and low levels of parental education, their eating habits are poor. Unless they arrive at school on time, they maybe get a donut for breakfast. After school "snack" is a piece of pizza. I can't imagine what constitutes as "dinner" when they arrive home. During a recent language lesson where we were discussing foods, not a single student could name "broccoli" in English OR Spanish. Their lack of education and experience with fruits and vegetables specifically is alarming.

My Project

My students are sadly becoming the statistic...and so are their parents. However, YOU can help change this! I have personally been to this organic farm, and it's an incredible experience! Each student (AND parent) will not only get to look at the fruits and vegetables, and not only get to learn about them from a professional, but they will get to taste every single one, picked straight from the ground in most cases, and even get to take many things home.

The education that this could provide my parents, and the exposure that my students would have to healthy food is immeasurable.

As an educator, I firmly believe in educating the WHOLE CHILD! With young students, that includes educating their parents. And what use is reading and writing if you don't live long enough or healthy enough to put it to good use in life anyway?
