Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Whenever I speak to my former students who have gone on to college, they always tell me their favorite part of high school was dissecting animals and learning about the body systems.

My students attend an inner city school in California.

All of my students are Title I eligible, meaning they participate in the free nutrition and lunch program at school. My school is medically themed, so these students typically have a strong interest in science.

My Project

There is no better way to understand and appreciate human physiology than to examine and carefully dissect mammal specimens such as the fetal pig. The organ systems of the fetal pig are amazingly similar to human organ systems. Since my students are preparing for the field of medicine and science, it is very important that they have hands-on experiences such as dissections.

It is my hope that by doing a careful dissection of the fetal pig, students will have a better appreciation and understanding of the body and organ systems.

I have seen this before, students disinterested in science, and then flabbergasted by the anatomy of animals. I know it will definitely convince many of my students to pursue a career in the sciences.
