Reading About China

My students need reading materials to both practice their reading skills and to learn more about China, a country we are studying for our school World Cultures event.

My Students

Open a child's eyes to learning about a different culture through reading. Reading for a purpose motivates struggling students to stick to the task of reading and adds exciting new background knowledge for the students who are already reading.

As in most first grade classrooms, my students' skills range from just learning to decode simple words to reading to learn.

Although our school is in a nice neighborhood in a large city, we still have students who are not read to, or do not have many books at home.

My Project

Cross curriculum learning around a topic, China, is highly motivating for all the students, especially when there are activities such as creating clay warriors after reading the book on the Hidden Armies of Ancient China, "Terra-Cotta Soldiers" an opportunity to demonstrate our learning. After reading about the Giant Pandas that are only found in China, as well as learning more about science and endangered species, the students will draw and watercolor Panda Bears.

Reading to learn, as well as reading for enjoyment, is why it is so important for all students to delve into learning to read.

Learning about life in another country gives a purpose to practice reading skills.
