Learning About Others Through Biographies

My students need a collection of nonfiction reading material in our classroom library. They will benefit greatly from this biography collection for pleasure reading material.

My Students

By reading about others, students will learn how to set goals and overcome obstacles in their own lives. Students today need role models and people they can look up to for their courage, perseverance, and sense of commitment.

Students in my 7th-grade reading classes attend a small, rural school district.

They are sheltered from the real world of well-known people. It is through reading that they can explore the lives of others and open up new ways of thinking. Additionally, they can have positive reading experiences by reading books that are of interest to them.

My Project

By adding this collection of biographical books to my classroom library, students will be excited when they learn that the books can be checked out for their pleasure reading. They will improve their reading abilities while reading nonfiction for pleasure. Through "Book Talks" the students will be able to share their reading experiences with others.

Reading is a critical foundation for student success in school and beyond.

Having high-quality reading material accessible is a major part of making that success happen. By expanding available reading material and providing reading time, students' proficiencies and enjoyment will grow.
