My Students

Many of Dr. Seuss' books grabbed the attention of my students as early readers. Now that they are 6th graders, some of them no longer enjoy reading. Many of Dr. Seuss' books have the ability to grab their attention again. The Lorax and the Sneeches will show them how!

I teach Language Arts at a rural Tennessee school.

Many of my students struggle with school. It is a daily challenge to develop lessons that will keep them interested and inspire them to put forth more than a token effort to complete their work. I have found that using my Dr. Seuss characters with my English lessons helps them to remember language rules. Inviting Dr. Seuss into my Reading lessons will provide that spark of interest and laughter.

My Project

I am requesting a variety of classic Dr. Seuss books. A number of his books have a deeper meaning than pure enjoyment. I intend to use The Lorax and the Sneeches to show this to my students and have them explore the political and environmental issues as well as the emotional growth issues that the books contain. I want them to understand that books will open the world for them.

My mission is to not only have my students read for class assignments, but to develop a joy in them to read.

I want to help them find topics that interest them and provide them with opportunities to see that sometimes a book has more potential than the cover indicates.
