A Timeless Classic For Worthy Readers

My students need one sturdy classroom set of "To Kill a Mockingbird" books to read and enjoy.

My Students

Do you remember what it was like the first time you read "To Kill a Mockingbird"? Did you grow up alongside Scout and Jem, standing bravely against the town's racism under Atticus' watchful eye? My students challenge themselves to study this classic text and they deserve sturdy, unbroken books.

Many of my students travel up to an hour to attend school each day.

They have families who support them as they dream of becoming the first people in their families to attend college. Although they come from impoverished areas of Boston and face seemingly insurmountable obstacles each day, my students work extremely hard and take accountability for their learning. They attend a public school with high expectations, and they receive copious amounts of work. They want to do their very best in school in order to achieve their dreams of attending college.

My Project

At my school, students strive to do their best. Students appreciate books and enjoy reading despite all of their homework and other assigned reading. Books are appreciated, but unfortunately, they become damaged through normal wear-and-tear and are too expensive to be replaced right away. Once this project is funded, I will be able to introduce ALL of my students to "To Kill a Mockingbird" using beautiful, durable copies of the classic text. As it stands right now, half of my books are damaged and unappealing. Once we receive new books, students' eyes will light up and their fingers will immediately begin flipping through the pages, wondering what Harper Lee has in store for them. This project is important to my students' development as readers. It breaks my heart to loan books with missing pages, split spines, and taped covers to half of my students. They work hard and therefore deserve to study classic literature in its best form.

July 11, 2010 marked the 50th anniversary of Harper Lee's Pulitzer Prize-winning classic, "To Kill A Mockingbird".

What better way to celebrate the anniversary of such a wonderful book than to donate copies to a group of deserving students in the Boston public schools?
