Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Teaching in an area of such high poverty creates challenges that go far beyond not having classroom materials. Having materials to produce work that students can display and be proud of would give my students a gift they don't often experience.

My students come to school hungry and sleepy due to economic factors beyond their control.

Everyday I face the challenge of keeping students interested and active in their education for those very reasons. I would love to be able to provide a more interactive classroom for my students. Due to the high poverty area that I teach in, my students come to school every year with no basic supplies. I buy all the classroom supplies, as well as many backpacks and pairs of shoes so that my students can be comfortable and proud to walk into the school each day.

My Project

I have been teaching for 10 years, and I have so many wonderful ideas and plans for a successful classroom. I know that with extra support from donors my students would greatly benefit from having materials in our room to use that would allow them to see their own thoughts and ideas evolve into works of art. The writing process is much more than stories in a notebook, and I want to give my students experiences to make them strong writers and prepare them for higher levels of education. I am requesting a binding machine and computer software that my students can learn to use during writer's workshop.

Having materials to help assist in the writing process and produce a book of writing to give to someone as a year end project would be something that my students would be able to say is their own.

Working with students in this type of setting makes a person appreciate the value of ownership. I believe that these kids need a chance to take ownership over their own education to the best of their ability.
