My Students

Research has demonstrated the power of intelligent games to engage and motivate students. Since one unique aspect of a game is that students approach the environment and task idiosyncratically, students at my school will create a game to inspire, motivate, and provoke positive academic traits.

We are proposing to use grant funds to maximize our ability to provide training and information to students and their parents, family members, guardians, advocates or other authorized representatives in how they can participate more fully in meeting their child’s academic and social-emotional needs in a school environment.

I am requesting two iPod touch digital players to collect, synthesize, and monitor classroom performance data regarding academic challenges at our school. Every student will compete as part of a team in three rounds, which will last for 2.5 weeks. Each round will consist of a pre-test and post-test, where students earn points based on the difference of their scores. Every student that makes a positive gain, regardless of its value will automatically advance to the next level. All other students may repeat the round. Your contribution will assist students in using iPod digital players to collect, maintain, and present student scores to the student body and home on a weekly basis.

My Project

We will review current academic data to understand the school’s overall level of effectiveness. Outcomes for our program are to increase the academic role and capacity of parents in the school’s academic activities as measured by the literacy and math component of the DC CAS. We desire to increase the motivation and desire of students to engage in the learning process.

We recognize that parent involvement and academic motivation is not limited to one set of activities, but arises from multiple dimensions of interaction within the school context (Epstein & Sanders, 2002; Hill & Craft, 2003).

Therefore the program will address one of these barriers which is the lack of available time in the teacher’s workday to promote parental involvement, Parents with lower social-economic status face the barriers of “inflexible work schedules."

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
