Rich Reading Across America

My students need 15 "Horton Hears a Who" books to read in small groups. They also need crayons and tissue paper to complete an art project after reading the book.

My Students

"The more you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go.” - Dr. Seuss, "I Can Read With My Eyes Shut!"

They are a group of high school students in Illinois whose goal is to increase literacy to the youth in our district.

They organize and execute a night of fun and reading for K-3 graders. The night begins by reading a book and completing an art project in small groups led by 3-4 high school students. The little ones will then get a healthy snack and make their way to our school's auditorium to watch the movie!

My Project

With the resources our students will be able to read the books to the little ones. Our high school students have been working on making this book come to life by changing their voices and reading with passion. They will also be able to tap into their artistic side to create flowers that they can take home with them. We will be placing little specks inside each flower while the little ones watch the movie!

During our first Polar Express event, over 60 high school students were absolutely EXTRAORDINARY leaders for over 100 K-3 grade students.

Our high school students kept asking me to plan these reading nights once a month. Many teachers from our high school attended with their children and brought back stories of how their children could not stop talking about how much fun they had! "Not all readers are leaders, but all leaders are readers" Harry Truman
