My Students

Communication is the key to building lasting friendships. Located 10 minutes from a US Army base and 40 minutes from a large city, we have a diverse population to include different language learners (primarily Spanish). This bilingual rug would help us practice our Spanish and English.

We are a public school of about 700 students located near an US Army base.

About 50 percent of the 20 kindergarten students in my class have a parent deployed in the middle east right now. We also have students that are English Language Learners, a few with very limited English speaking ability. About 30 percent of my students are on free or reduced lunch program. I like to maximize our various cultures by teaching my English speakers key Spanish phrases so that our English Language Learners will feel more comfortable. The younger that children are able to learn a new language, the easier it is for them to remember.

My Project

The bilingual learning rug will help our classroom tremendously. Not only, will it serve as a visual resource for children needed to choose vocabulary words to speak in English and Spanish. It also can be used in phonics and math lessons. We can use the rug during circle time, peer group work, as well as quiet reading time. My students can use it to match up beginning sounds, match quantities with numbers, and master English and Spanish vocabulary. It will be used throughout the entire day to help my students build math and literacy skills.

We need this rug so that we can bridge the communication gap between all of my students.

We will use it to practice learning words in a new language as well as a tool for phonics and math activities. Working in a public school system with limited resources, we would never be able to order something like this without your help. We would love your help!
