Balloon Building and Buoyancy!

My students need lots of glue sticks and colored tissue paper (20"x30" sheets) to build working hot air balloons which we'll launch at the end of our buoyancy unit!

My Students

Density and buoyancy are difficult concepts for many eighth-graders to understand... but a memorable, hands-on experience really helps! Please help me provide my kids with the opportunity to see and feel buoyancy in action by building and launching five-foot-tall hot air balloons!

We are a middle school in California.

Our students are ethnically, linguistically, and economically diverse. Many of them are first- or second-generation Americans. Many came here because their parents knew that they wouldn't have educational opportunities in their home countries. Our students are bright, sweet, and eager. You can help provide them with an educational and exciting experience.

My Project

In order to build hot air balloons, each student group will need lots of tissue paper and glue sticks, as well as building patterns and instructions that we have already prepared. With these materials, students will work in groups to build hot air balloons almost two meters tall and about four meters in circumference. At the end of the unit, we'll use a heat source to actually launch the balloons from our school patio... students will actually feel the upward tug of buoyancy on their balloons as they fill with hot air, and then watch their creations take to the sky. It's a terrific project that helps students better understand the difficult topic of buoyancy, while also incorporating important science ideas like heat, atomic theory, and energy conversion.

This is a project I've done with students before.

It's always been successful and memorable. It's an experience that students mention years later as a special moment in their middle school experience. But it requires a lot of materials, and as our budget tightens, I don't want my students to miss this terrific opportunity. Please help us provide our kids with this wonderful learning project!
