Bringing Student Writing to Life with Dragon

My students need Dragon speech recognition software in order to transfer their thoughts and ideas from their mind to their paper.

My Students

I teach in a classroom that has students from grades 6 through 8 at any point in time. These students are some of the most expressive students in the entire school, yet no one knows it. They can narrate stories that captivate my imagination, however are unable to produce this same product in writing

The students I work with attend a public middle school in Ashland, MA.

They receive pull-out special education English Language Arts. They enjoy learning in a small group setting, and thrive when working on a project of interest. The students love to express themselves, however the pained expression that overcomes them when asked to write or type a paper is overwhelming. They struggle to produce their ideas in writing, the process of writing is so painful and time consuming for them that ideas are lost in the transfer. When they are able to dictate to a scribe, their finished product is leaps and bounds above their final product when asked to write it themselves. A speech recognition software that allows students to dictate their ideas rather than go through the painful process of writing, will make them excited to express themselves on paper again.

My Project

The Dragon software will allow my students to speak their ideas into the computer, which will in turn type their thoughts. By being able to dictate their writing, ideas will not be lost and forgotten. The finished product will be something students can read and be proud of, rather than ashamed and embarrassed of. The increased confidence and improved attitudes of students will be immediately noticeable as the frustrations of writing and typing are erased with the use of the software.

Students with learning disabilities face obstacles each and every day due to the nature of their disabilities.

Going to class is not the part of school they look forward to most, because it usually means frustrations over how hard simple tasks become for them. By alleviating the frustrations of writing, we will be alleviating some of the stress imparted on these students due to disabilities they have. This is a product that will excite students in my classroom.
