Fostering Future Authors

My students need a new writing station where they can work and store their supplies. Currently, we do not have a space in our classroom dedicated to strictly writing.

My Students

Help our youngest writers use writing time to actually write! Too much of our time is currently spent looking for and gathering supplies. Our children need a space where they can go to daily and know that their writing will be waiting for them. Your donation encourages creativity and independence.

I currently teach in a low income, high poverty, urban school district in New York State.

My current classroom contains 18 kindergarten students. Among the 18 children, two of the students are English Language Learners and three more come from bilingual households. My group of children this year learn best through hands on experiences, visual examples, and a great deal of practice. Writing provides them with the opportunity to use skills they have learned throughout the day and tie it all together. Your donation would give my students the chance to reach the high standards set before them, while giving the children the opportunity to have a consistent writing space and become independent thinkers.

My Project

Keeping our classroom organized and tidy is a big job. We do not currently have the space or resources to keep all of the children's work and supplies in an easily accessible area. With this new writing station, I will be able to keep all of the writing supplies in one place. My students thrive from stability and consistency. Each day we have literacy work stations. One of our literacy stations is writing. During this time my responsibilities as the teacher are to provide small group instruction to students who are struggling, on grade level, and need enrichment. All of the station supplies are kept in buckets and the students take the station bucket and go to a table to work. I do not have enough tables in the classroom to have the stations pre-set. This arrangement is not working for writing. The students' writing journals are getting ripped, wrinkled, and destroyed. It is hard for them to feel proud of the work they are doing and stay on task when this happens.

Reading and writing go hand in hand.

Students who have the opportunity to become great writers will become great readers. A writing work station will help my students feel excited about writing and they will WANT to go to writing station and do a great job everyday. I hope that you will donate to this project and provide my kindergarten students with a space that will help foster excitement in writing. Who knows, your donation could help a child become an author one day!
