My Students

Winter in Vermont is long. Everyone needs to find joy in an outdoor activity. We need durable sleds to get a group of kids outside, who although are not opting to participate in our ski and ride program, still need to get outside and breath fresh air and enjoy the magic of winter in Vermont.

We live in rural Vermont.

Our county is made up of small towns that have merged together to send their children to a large middle and high school. My students are economically diverse. A large number of my students live in poverty. My students are pretty typical of most middle school students. They spend a lot of time with their friends. Overall, our school is bright and clean and our faculty is highly motivated to give our students the best education that they are capable of. Every winter our school runs a phenomenal "Ski and Ride" program, where students can elect to spend 6 winter afternoons skiing at a local ski resort. Despite our goal to make this affordable for everyone with the option of scholarships, many students do not participate in our annual program. The students that will be served by this grant are students who deserve to be outside as much as the other students, joyfully experiencing winter in Vermont.

My Project

Some of the activities we have planned are cross-country skiing, snow shoeing and sledding. WE NEED SLEDS. We have the other gear available for our students, but sledding will only happen if the kids remember to bring their own sleds. We anticipate that we will have at least 30 kids sledding at one time, with a rotation of students in the afternoon. But if they don't bring sleds, they will find themselves inside sitting out and missing all of the fun.

ALL of our students should be outside breathing fresh air and learning the joys of winter fun in Vermont.

Experiencing fun is an important part of community building. When the kids have something to look forward to in their school week, all of their time- in and out of class- is more tolerable. This is our first year to expand our program and we hope to encourage healthy living and promote positive community values, therefore making our school a place for children to thrive.
