Teaching Discipline and Confidence Through Taekwondo

My students need sparring gear to allow our taekwondo team to fully train and compete at tournaments.

My Students

Courtesy, Integrity, Perseverance, Self-Control, and Indomitable Spirit. We end every class reciting the five tenets of taekwondo. Now that our first class has graduated to yellow belts and more beginners are enrolling, it is time to take their training to the next level (SAFELY).

My students travel from down the block or many miles away to attend school.

Our non-selective school focuses on having 100% of its graduates attend college and is known for tremendous growth. Many of our freshmen finish the year with a projected ACT score exceeding the graduating ACT score of other neighborhood schools. However, academics is not the sole focus. Several of the students that I assign math homework to by day also participate in our school's first ever taekwondo team in the early evening. The team not only provides balance to an academically intense course load, but it also provides students with an activity many in the area can not financially afford. This is of course in addition to the self-defense they learn.

My Project

With the sparring gear being requested, the team can increase their level of training. Until now we've had to use stationary targets to practice techniques. In terms of self-defense, this is less than desirable. We could finally work on counter techniques at real-life speed! The gear would also enable us to compete at local tournaments. My students are very proud of their accomplishments thus far (breaking their first boards and doing demonstrations in front of the student body). I would like to provide them with the opportunity to take their skills outside of the walls of their school building. Without sparring gear, this is not a possibility.

As a math teacher, I know the importance of studying and classroom work.

As a former high-school student, I know the need for balance and influences beyond classroom teachers. Taekwondo provided that for me. Now it's time for me to pass it forward.
