"It doesn't matter who you are, where you come from. The ability to triumph begins with you. Always." [Oprah Winfrey] My Kindergarten students have started their journey into the wonderful world of READING! We are excited to help our students of all levels progress with the TAG Reading System.

As a successful Early Childhood school, we provide a nurturing, yet rigorous community of learning.

We are a Title I, New York City Public School in Queens, where nearly 60% of students qualify for free/reduced lunch. Our community is quite international with almost 70% of our students coming from homes where English is spoken as a second language. One-fifth of our students receive extra support for learning English. We also provide communications to parents in 4 home languages [English, Chinese, Spanish, Korean]. For English Language Learners (ELL), the initial literacy gap is wider and we use a variety of tools and techniques to motivate and improve their reading and writing performance in English.

My Project

To help our Kindergarten students continue to develop their reading skills, we are requesting 2 TAG Readers plus storage cases and headphones to create a mini set of reading tools for our classroom. The cases will protect the TAG pens and the books. Plus, they will keep our TAG supplies neatly organized and portable. The children's headphones will allow students to read independently without distraction from other class activities. They also have a volume limiting feature, which is important for protecting their ears. We are also requesting 2 sets of each of TAG's Learn to Read Phonics series (total of 4 sets / 24 total books). Book set #1 focuses on Short Vowels and #2 features Long Vowels, Silent E & Y. These titles are perfect for beginning readers & will be incredibly helpful for our ELL students. The activity card sets will also be fun learning using TAG! Battery charger and extra batteries will make sure our eager students never have to worry about running out of power.

Our English Language Learners will especially benefit from the audio, read-along features of the TAG Reading System.

Hearing the correct word pronunciations will reinforce their learning and provide guidance as new vocabulary words are introduced. Emergent readers will gain confidence and begin to see the world with new eyes! It's so exciting to think about how much learning to read will improve the path for our young students. Leapfrog's TAG will help them move forward even faster!
