Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember the time when the teacher asked you to read for the class and you got nervous? Your knees shook and your voice trembled, right? How would you feel if aside from being nervous, you cannot put the sounds together to form a word?

I work at a public elementary school.

Most of our students are eligible for free or reduced meals. Our students have shown academic gains but there are still a few who could benefit from additional academic support. I work with students from kinder to fifth grade who love to read but may have difficulty with decoding, blending, fluency and/or comprehension. They are always striving hard and are eager to learn. They love to come to my room to learn to become better readers.

My Project

Many people are going crazy over the iPad, and I am one of them, but for my students' needs, the Lenovo A1 tablet I am requesting is the best fit for them. The tablet will allow students to learn phonics, blending and fluency in small groups and individually. Because it is portable and interactive, additional intensive instruction can take place at a student's area or anywhere in the classroom. Individual progress assessments become easy with its PDF reading capability. The students will also be able to access the digital version of the classroom books, and listen to or read along while the story is playing.

Students learn best if they have a good model to follow, if they receive immediate, formative response to their mistakes.

If learning is interesting, interactive, individualized, and appropriate to their skills and needs, students thrive. Technology that is interactive and can demonstrate to individual students the proper decoding, phrasing and intonation while working at their own pace is a very powerful tool. Not many laptops can do that, nor can any printed book; so I choose the tablet.
