My Students

My students cannot afford to buy books to read and the school district has limited funds, making it difficult to keep our library stocked. The local library is underfunded and the larger branches are 30 miles away. The area’s only major bookstore closed this year, making getting new books difficult.

My students live in a highly impoverished and rural area on a reservation in Washington State.

Over 90% of them live well below the poverty line and struggle to own proper clothes, food, and school materials -- owning books, technology, or venturing outside our rural valley is nothing something many of them are fortunate to be able to do. Funding for our school is minimal and every year we’re asked to do more with less. The local bookstore closed this year, making it difficult for students to find new books, forcing them to rely on the school and libraries for all their reading needs and we aren’t equipped to meet that need. Thanks to micro-grants provided by DonorsChoose and other organizations, I’ve been able to provide new reading materials for my students and replacing old technology, but the need is greater than I’ve been able to provide for and my students need additional assistance from donors who are looking to help improve the education of some impoverished and deserving kids.

My Project

Because of our rural location and poverty level, getting access to interesting or up-to-date books is challenging for many of our students. Similar to a laptop-exchange program, I want to start an eReader-exchange program for those students who would like to read but can’t afford new books. While a program like this is expensive to start, it has a lower overhead once it is up and running. eBooks sell for less that physical books and one B&N Nook account can sync to multiple devices, making each book we buy essentially stretch further. For relatively little cost, the library on these devices can be updated constantly as new books come out, expanding the amount of books available for our students to read while minimizing cost and storage issues. Buying 4 Nook eReaders is a great start, but the eventual goal is to get enough so that a good amount of the student body can check them out and take them home to complete required readings for class and expand their literary horizons.

I have students who ask me every year what I can suggest to them to read.

What I’ve found is that for many of them if I do not provide the books for them, they will never get them. We just live too far away from a decent book store and we have too little money to buy the books our students really need. A program like this could be one way we solve that problem and could help me empower a generation of readers.
