The Hunger Games: Food For Thought

My students need 40 copies of The Hunger Games to motivate, excite, and ignite!

My Students

How often have you said, "The book was so much better than the movie..." Now, how often do you hear a teenager utter those words?

After our book club watched the fourth installment of the Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, we engaged in breathless comparisons between the book and movie version!

We can't wait to keep up our enthusiasm for reading with "The Hunger Games"! Our students saw the trailer for the upcoming film and begged to read the book. As an open enrollment inner city high school, roughly three quarters of our students come each year far below grade level in reading and writing. Most of my students are reluctant readers... few read independently or outside of school. We are definitely committed to encourage and support reading and writing at all levels, in all grades, and across curricula. We are doing so with a school-wide literacy initiative to increase reading time in classrooms and at home, enhance literacy strategies in all classes, give greater access to books, and increase student buy-in and appreciation of reading as cool, important, and interesting.

My Project

Reading "The Hunger Games" in our book club will provide a low stakes opportunity for students to try out the literacy strategies we are working on in academic classes and allow them to take risks (reading aloud, participating in Reader's Theater) in a small, supportive group. We will also have writing opportunities after seeing the film (comparative essays! persuasive essays! book and movie reviews for the school newspaper!) The book is also sure to hook students and inspire them to read the series, and hopefully serve as the perfect scaffold to engage them in an entire genre of dystopian literature that may be unfamiliar to them, such as George Orwell's "1984." Additionally, "The Hunger Games" can be used in our 9th grade literacy classes that are targeted to support struggling, emergent, and IEP readers and writers. Students of all grades will also be able to choose to read these books during advisory and independent reading times.

Mark Twain: "A person who doesn't read is no better off than a person who can't read." Terrence Paul: "The average amount of time spent reading for all grades is 7.1 minutes a day in public schools around the nation." If you can read this... you can make a significant difference in our students' lives!
