My Students

Have you ever tried to have someone explain how a machine works? Could you make a picture in your mind? Wouldn't it just be easier to build a model? Of course! Now you can give my kids that opportunity for true learning and understanding.

My students are inner city kids.

They come from urban, high-risk backgrounds. Many of them will be the first to graduate from high school in their family. Our school is trying to give them a quality education so they can improve their chances of graduating from high school and possibly even attend college.

My Project

I am requesting K'Nex kits for learning about simple machines (levers, pulleys, wedges and screws). These are concepts that can be kind of abstract to have to visualize, so I would like to be able to put something in their hands so that they can fully grasp the concepts. These kits will also be able to help them visualize how work and energy are affected by machines, and why we (humans) are so keen to continue to build more effective machines.

This project is important because these kids have not had the kind of access to quality education that so many of their peers have had.

They need everything we can give them to improve their lot and help encourage and foster a sense of excitement and interest in learning. Hands-on materials are the best way to do so that I have found.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
