My Students

My school's poverty rate is 95%. Most of these kids come from homes that aren't able to provide their basic needs, let alone a chance to excel and become masters of their learning. In order to inspire and motivate my kids to try to go above and beyond, they need a high-interest item to strive for.

My students are bright, intelligent kids that are brimming with potential.

Although they come with many challenges, like hunger, homelessness, sleep deprivation, sickness and loneliness, they are still able to do amazing things. Last year, it was amazing to see what kids really took it seriously and cared for their spelling lists: taking them on the bus, to recess, lunch to study and practice with others. They had no incentive to do well: we did not have much to spend for prizes. They were excited just to show their parents and classmates how hard they worked. Some of these students show up every single day ready to learn, even though their home life creates a challenge for them to even stay awake. They still try so hard after going through what many of us teachers never had to face. What better way to thank them for going above and beyond?

My Project

My students need a computer as the grand prize for the winner of the Spelling Bee. They need motivation and a way to continue learning at home! IThe majority of our students do not have personal access to computers. Our spelling bee winner will not only be inspired to study harder in spelling, but also get the chance to learn a second language, a skill not many people are able to achieve! I am requesting 2 computers to use as prizes for my students.

Not only will it inspire grades 3-5 to study harder for the spelling bee, but it will give a student the chance to finally get ahead.

Being able to know even a few words in another language gives them a chance to continue their learning. It will be an empowering gift!
