Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Can you remember what it was like the first time you went to the zoo? I can,but unfortunately many of my students lack exposure to simple things that we take for granted like a trip to the zoo. Our wild animal theme allows for an indepth study of wild animals, their habitats, and characteristics.
For many of my students, their first exposure to field trips is when they enter school.
As a teacher of students with special needs, finding that spark that will capture their interest and love of learning is key. My role is to help my students become passionate about learning.
I provide special education services to some amazing students in grades 1-4. These students have a variety of needs including learning disabilities, speech and language impairments, autism, and severe cognitive impairments, to name a few. They face many challenges and require different modes of instruction in order for them to gain access to an education. Many are English Language Learners.
Our school is located in a large urban city in CT. I have the rare opportunity of turning these students on to learning. It is a privilege to work with these special students who are near and dear to me.
My Project
These materials are perfect because they are structured, visual, and engaging.
The Wild Animal Theme Book collection will provide good literature to support the instruction. Non-fiction texts allow students to learn to read, and read to learn. The materials in the theme box will help me develop hands-on activities and lessons that will teach critical thinking skills. The giant stampers and the ink pads will be used to create a writing center where students can stamp their own wild animal scene and write about it. Our students will learn skills such as following directions, reading, writing, language, and fun with these classroom activities.
My students deserve the best the world has to give them. My hope is to provide activities and lessons that will teach them the necessary skills to succeed in life!
Students with special needs face challenges making it difficult to understand and relate to what they learn in school.
Many of my students are turned off by school because they haven't had much success. Hands-on activities, visuals, and thematic units build schema leading to confidence across the curriculum!
"Once children learn how to learn, nothing is going to narrow their mind. The essence of teaching is to make learning contagious, to have one idea spark another." -- Marva Collins
