My students need 4 sets of leveled books that they can practice reading at school and then check out to take home to read with their parents.

My Students

I teach in a high-poverty school and most of my students do not have appropriate reading materials at home. Funding has been stagnate for 4 years in our county with no money to replace the torn, taped, soiled books my students check out to read at home with their families.

I love watching the thrill on the faces of my students when they first begin to read.

They get so excited and can't wait to show off their newest skills. They say things like "My mom/dad isn't going to believe this!" and "I can't wait to read this book to my big/little sister/brother" I am embarrassed to send home the books that I have been checking out for over a decade. Many have been lost and those that remain are in a sad state.

My Project

For so many of my students, clothes come from Goodwill, food comes from The Salvation Army, toys come from yard sales. Having new, beautiful books on an appropriate reading level is such a hook for keeping these kids excited about reading. It also coveys a message that books are important and valuable. A soiled, torn book diminishes its value as a prized possession and an important tool for learning.

Is there anything more important to building a child's educational foundation than instilling an early love of reading?

I actually had a former student ask if she could keep a book at home a little longer because she had almost taught her mom to read it without help. This stands out as one of the most rewarding days in my 32 years of teaching.
