To Print or Not to Print

My students need an Epson Stylus Pro 3880 Standard Edition color inkjet printer to use for printing digital photography

Mr. Taylor Savannah Arts Academy
Savannah, GA Grades 9-12

My Students

Do you remember the first time you got a roll of film back from being developed? Photography has taken leaps and bounds since those days. Now everything is instant. Instead of traditional darkrooms, we now have a digital darkroom where we combine image editing software and inkjet printers.

The students I teach attend a dedicated visual and performing arts high school in Georgia where they are required to select a major and continue on that path, whether it is in Visual Arts, Communication Arts, Dance, Theater, or Music for the duration of their high school career.

Along with the challenging arts classes, students are taking advanced academic coursework as well as being involved in a number of extracurricular activities. These students are highly motivated and extremely talented and strive to be the best that they can be.

My Project

My students are taking digital photographs but are left out of a large part of the process. After taking a photo and editing it with software, the student then has to turn around and have it printed at a store where they have no control over the final outcome if the printed photo. The creative process of printing and all that it entails is taken away from them. Having this Epson printer will allow students to have full creative control over the entire digital photography process. From start to finish the students will be hands on and able to select everything from print size to the type of paper the images are printed on.

Although the rest of the photographic world had moved into the digital age, sadly we as as school have not.

The photography classes taught are still primarily traditional Black and White processed in a darkroom. I have over the years tried to build up a digital program buy purchasing some items but do to budget cuts and lack op funding it is nearly impossible to purchase the equipment needed to fully integrate and update the photography classes to the standards of today.
