Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

One of the main challenges physical education teachers face in gym classes is introducing students to new types of sports or activities. Unfortunately, many students are deprived from participating in various racket sports such as ping-pong, badminton, and tennis due to a lack

The students I teach grow up in poor socioeconomic backgrounds.

Many of them attend schools that yield a high percentage of free and reduce meals. The ethnicity build up of the students are 45% Hispanic, 43% African and the remainder a combination of other races. The Hispanic students come from Central America where soccer is the only sport they play in schools as well as a leisure sport and when they migrate to the USA, they have a difficult time accepting any new sport. Conversely, African American males participate primarily in basketball and football because of their household culture since their toddler stage and when introduced to other sports, they are unreceptive to it because of a lack of knowledge.

My Project

After playing on wooden boards for two months and learning to maneuver the ball on uneven surfaces with gaps, students can execute flawless services and smash hits from an authentic ping-pong table. Obtaining new ping-pong tables allows students to participate on legal size dimension tables as oppose to hitting the ball wide or short due to playing on illegal size tables. Despite the imperfection of the made up tables, students suggested that we host an after school ping-pong club, this is the main reason why I reached out to donors choose because the students acquired an interest to play a new sport that is exciting.

I hope that any member from donors choose can support my ping-pong project because it allows students to learn about a different type of sport besides soccer, basketball and football.

Based on my observation, girl students enjoy participating in ping-pong because they play with students on their level, as oppose to team sports classes that deprive them from being involve.
