Math Cameras

My students need 5 flip cameras. They will use the cameras to work in groups to create YouTube math tutorials.

My Students

Do you remember sitting in a math class for what felt like an interminable amount of time doing your best to pay attention as your teacher talked, and talked, and talked? My students need as many opportunities as possible to add their voice to our classroom.

I teach transfer students in an urban school.

100% of our students were unsuccessful and felt unappreciated at their previous schools. They are enthusiastic, intelligent young men and women that are desperately trying to discover a way to be successful in school and life.

My Project

The 5 flip cameras will be used every week by students to videotape their work and explanations. They will post their videos onto YouTube. The videos will offer tutorials on all of the topics that my students study. A typical assignment would be to videotape an explanation of how to graph y = 3x +5 that viewers will be able to use to help them graph any equation in the form of y=max + b. The cameras will offer my students a way to demonstrate their understanding that feels more authentic than taking a test. The use of the cameras will also serve as an additional source of motivation to deeply understand the mathematical content. Students who don't see themselves as mathematicians will be able to watch themselves explaining challenging content that seemed like Greek to them a week ago.

I think these cameras will go even further to transform what happens outside of my classroom.

Students who are struggling or have missed class time due to a variety of reasons will be able to ground themselves by watching the videos of their current classmates or students who were in their own shoes in previous years. I hope the videos will also be viewed by students from other schools, but mostly I know the cameras will transform what happens in my classroom.
