First Year Teacher in a First Year Dual Language Program!

My students need books in English and Spanish, such as "Dolphins," "El Burrito y la Tuna," "The Donkey and the Prickly Pear" and "Sol A Sol," to fuel their love for learning and language acquisition. They also need a variety of puzzles, magnetic letters, and a Dr. Seuss Spanish Hardcover Library.

My Students

I only realized after beginning the school year as a first year teacher in a new dual language (bilingual) program, how much more materials the other First Grade teachers had in comparison to my classroom.

Up until now, during the year I have been creating activities from scratch, and going to our local library once or twice a week to find books that I need for my students and for my lessons.

My class consists of 12 native English-speakers and 6 native Spanish-speakers in one classroom. This environment is incredible for the students in terms of challenging them to think in more than one language, and challenging them to not only learn content, but vocabulary and cultural acceptance on a daily basis.

My Project

My students need books in English and Spanish, such as Dolphins, El Burrito y la Tuna,The Donkey and the Prickly Pear and Sol A Sol, to fuel their love for learning and language acquisition. The resources needed for our classroom include books in Spanish and English, as well as ready-made activities that promote word recognition, fluency, and comprehension. There are also some Math activities, but my school has been very gracious and provided many math manipulatives for my classroom already.

This project is so important to my students and myself, because I want them to have a great education despite my being a first year teacher, and not having accumulated resources year after year.

This would be an amazing start to my classroom library and "arsenal" of materials that will help my students learn. It will save me the days (yes, days) of searching the internet for free activities, printing, cutting, laminating, etc. that it has taken so far for my students to continue to learn.
