My students need 20 mats to lay on during nap time so they are not laying on the floor and more importantly so they can wake up refreshed and ready to learn in the afternoon.
Rest time in pre-k is a time to take a break from the hectic nature of pre-school. In my class my students have not had the privilege of laying on resting mats. I would love it if each one of my students had their own mats so they would feel truly comfortable during their down time in class.
We call ourselves the Global Scholars on a mission to learn about the world!
My students are extremely vibrant and eager to learn. If you ask them what their goals are, they can tell you it is to grow their brains and more specifically to be able to read! They truly enjoy learning about the world around them and are constantly asking "Why?".
Together I believe my students and I have created a great community in our classroom, despite what difficult external factors they may face when they are not at school. Our school is in a very poor neighborhood in Oklahoma and even at four they have gone through more than most adults. However, their resilient nature is what makes my kids so amazing. They already know so much about the world around them and are curious to know more. I want to provide an environment that will allow them to prosper academically and socially, because I believe there are no limits to what my students can accomplish.
My Project
Imagine you are four and during your nap time you have to sleep on the cold hard floor. This is a reality for my kids, while many pre-k classes have rest time mats, my kids do not. They are an expense that many parents cannot afford and rest time is often over looked as not being educational, so buying mats is not made a fiscal priority.
However, I view rest time as a way to teach students how to wind down, become calm, and physically rest their bodies. In general, these 20 mats will aid their learning by providing them a time to recuperate from the constant learning and interaction of a day in pre-k, which will then allow them to better concentrate and retain information in the later part of the day. I want to provide my students with a safe and comfortable class room experience and I believe these mats will make the rest time a more comfortable and relaxing part of the day.
I cannot fully control what goes on with my students outside of the confines of my classroom, therefore I want to make their school experience as enjoyable as possible.
Mats will allow my students to catch up on lost sleep, relax their bodies before tackling the afternoon content, and teach them how to wind down. My pre-k Global Scholars would appreciate these mats and definitely put them to good use.
