Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Success builds upon success, and success in school is something with which my students have little experience. Reading and math are often seen as "too hard", but I refuse to let them fail. We work hard every day, and they deserve the chance to have access to high interest literature.

My students have not had the easiest time when it comes to their education.

They are in my class because they have repeated one or more grades; they should be in high school, but are still in middle school. Of 12 students, 10 are male, over 80% of them qualify for free or reduced lunch, 80% are minority, and 80% of them have not passed state assessments in reading or math. It is a small group setting that requires plenty of intensive academic and behavioral support. If they are not engaged in what they are doing, do not see a direct link between the material and their future ("Why do we have to learn this?"), or cannot relate to the material, then keeping the students interested is not the easiest task. As their teacher, I challenge them to do better, expect great things, and reward frequently. I would like to continue to challenge and reward them with a class set of books that is exciting, and that they can relate to.

My Project

Exciting literature enriches the lives of many. "The Hunger Games", by Suzanne Collins, tells the story of a girl their age, 14. The main character in the novel is the product of a single parent household, and is responsible for providing for her family. The character is chosen to participate in a "fight to the finish" contest, where all her skills are put to the test for daily survival. She wins the competition in a rather rebellious fashion. Multiple elements of this story will appeal to my students. Many of them can relate to a single parent household. Several of my students, already have part-time jobs, their salary going to their families, not their own pocket. Daily survival, when it comes to food, or fending off others, is a daily challenge for my students. The main character in this book demonstrates that one person, who faces so many challenges, can rise above and win. Students will read for pleasure, relate to the character, and discuss what motivates them to rise above.

This is a chance for my students to have access to what so many other students have, exciting young adult literature.

It is a chance for them to read for enjoyment, not to see reading as a threat. They love to discuss the challenges in their lives, to identify with others that experience similar challenges, and to know that I want to listen. This book will give us another opportunity to enjoy learning together, and so much more. If I could afford to buy them each this book, I would.
