My Students

“How do we know who gets to go first?” “Paper, rock, scissors, FAST! I want to have lots of time to play!” The sounds of excited voices echo through the classroom as students embark on a comprehension journey to master reading skills, all while playing a game.

We expect our 125 upper elementary students to describe the majestic farmscape surrounding our rural Indiana school.

The group at hand is a mix of on, above, and below level readers and writers. The one common thread between these students is the variety of learning styles they share. A majority of these students are active learners, learning best when tasks are visual and hands on. These independent learners are begging for more opportunities to use games to improve in the area of reading comprehension strategies and word study skills.

My Project

“Reading is to the mind, what exercise is to the body.” -Sir Richard Steele Our goal is to exercise the minds on our students with engaging games that cover reading and word strategies such as inference, context clues, cause and effect, fact or opinion, sequencing, vocabulary, predictions, main idea, reading for details, figurative language, parts of speech, homophones, synonyms, and antonyms. We know reading and writing go hand in hand. In an effort to boost our students' understanding of what they read and write, we want to incorporate reading and word games into small group independent learning through literacy workstations in our 90-minute reading block. Games of differentiated levels will benefit learners through flexible grouping within the classes. We will purchase 18 games to be shared across our school’s fourth and fifth grade classrooms. The games will be kept in a centralized location so that all fourth and fifth grade teachers have access to the games at all times.

It is with appreciation to you, the donor, that we submit this proposal.
