Modern Slavery: Captive Girls and Women Around the World

My students need a selection of materials describing women's roles, dreams, opportunities and obstacles, to supplement our reading of Patricia McCormick's Sold.

Philadelphia, PA Grades 9-12

My Students

Government agencies estimate that a million or more women and children are trafficked into slavery each year. After reading the heart-wrenching fictional account of one such girl, in Patricia McCormick's Sold, how can my students learn more about women's global situations, now and in the past?

My students live in a big East Coast City.

They are mostly African-American, in 9th grade, funny, imaginative and intellectually curious. Our school is very small and in an isolated corner of the city; it is considered a magnet school and my students are determined to learn, achieve and get to and through college. They face obstacles, not the least of which is the severe budget crisis we (and many other districts) currently face. Over 60% of my students live below the federal poverty line.

My Project

I am impressed by the way my students empathize with Lakshmi's plight. Sold leaves them anxious to learn more about women and girls, past and present, around the world. Unfortunately, women's studies isn't big in our book room and our library is defunct. The titles I've chosen include Somaly Mann's account of her incredible fight against Cambodian trafficking, and Half the Sky, about an agency which lays out a worldwide agenda for addressing the abuse and neglect of girls and women. These two books will help students understand that they themselves can make a difference. Other books on my list will educate students about the global and historical nature of the problem, providing a wider lens and making students less likely to believe that 'it can't happen to me' or 'it doesn't happen here.' Abuse, trafficking and job discrimination can and do happen here, to anyone. I want to give students the tools to understand, recognize and address all forms of abuse and injustice.

Girls and women in the United States are luckier than women in other parts of the world, right?

WRONG! US teens, particularly African Americans, are frequently the targets of traffickers. What's more, thousands of US girls and women are victims of domestic abuse, sexual harassment and workplace discrimination. Unfortunately, this harsh treatment is so common that it goes unnoticed and unaddressed. My project will ensure that Lankenau ninth-graders notice and address global injustice.
