Calling All Altos!

My students need an alto xylophone. We only have 3 soprano xylophones and the students need to be able to hear the difference in pitch and tone quality with an alto!

My Students

Alto versus soprano - do you know the difference? With this incredible gift of an alto xylophone my students will be able to see, hear, and feel the difference! Since children's voices are generally in the soprano range it is hard for them to understand what "alto" truly means.

The students at my K-5 elementary building are naturally curious and inquisitive.

They are mostly impoverished and have very little resources to experience more than the most basic elements of life. Music is an exciting world to them, and exploring sounds on instruments is an activity that most of them will only have at school! They love playing instruments, especially the "big" ones!

My Project

My students are becoming very talented at playing Orff instruments and Orff arrangements, but they lack the experience of hearing and playing these arrangements as they are truly intended to be played. Most accompaniments and many other parts are designed to be played on lower-pitched instruments, such as this alto xylophone. Since we do not have any alto xylophones the students cannot hear the difference and all of the sounds seem to blend in together. Having an alto xylophone will allow the students to aurally distinguish the different layers of an Orff composition and will help them to understand the difference between the alto and soprano classifications.

Your generous donation to this project will allow my students the opportunity to experience the contrast between alto and soprano xylophones, which will open up a whole new world of sound for them!

Once they realize that the same instrument can be made larger or smaller to create lower and higher sounds, they can transfer that knowledge to understand the differences in sounds of instruments in the brass, string and woodwind families!
