My Students

Can you imagine being a struggling reader? You want to check out a book you can read, but you don't want to look like you are checking out a "baby book". Graphic novels have simple text, engaging picture support, and have no stigma attached to checking them out!

We have over 400 students at our school.

They all come to the library once a week. Over 20% of our students are considered English Language Learners(ELLs). Over 50% of our students qualify for free and reduced lunch. Many ELLs and other students struggle with reading. These students struggle with trying to check out a book that is appropriate for their below grade level reading skills, but will not be immediately identifiable as a book that is below grade level.

My Project

Graphic novels are currently only 1.5% of our collection, but they represent 8.4% of all books checked out. They are very popular. Graphic novels have lots of picture support, and do not have an overwhelming amount of text on the pages. For these reasons, graphic novels are not overwhelming reading material for struggling readers. Graphic novels are enjoyed by all students, so struggling readers do not feel any stigma attached to checking out graphic novels.

Your donation will help provide more graphic novels for our students.

These books are in high demand. Struggling readers, in particular, are being targeted by this grant. You will help with student literacy and enjoyment of books.
