Counting Down to Brain Breaks

My students need a large timer to track time between "Brain Breaks." My students also need 4 individual timers to self-monitor work and behavior.

My Students

Even as adults we find it hard to sit still. It is even harder for children, especially when there is no break in sight! Let's work together to help my students keep track of time between "Brain Breaks."

My students attend a public, K-2 elementary school in a 5A city school district in Mississippi.

There are approximately 1200 students in our school, with 20 in my classroom. Our district is made up of a culturally and economically diverse group of children, due to our close proximity to a state university.

My Project

Our school counselors asked a few teachers to participate in “Brain Break” activities, and monitor how they effect behavior, attention and performance in our classrooms. After 30 minutes of direct instruction or stationary work the teacher picks a quick activity from the brain breaks flip book. These breaks are supposed to increase on task activity during direct instruction. I would like to incorporate the large timer into my brain breaks. The large display and visible time elapse will help the students self monitor the time and stay on-task until the next brain break. The timer will also help the teacher remember to give the students brain breaks. The visual time elapse will help students have a visual aid in understanding, measuring and monitoring time. The mini-timers would be used by students with excessive trouble staying on task as personal, self monitoring tools. These students would have individual time goals to receive positive reinforcement for staying on task.

The expectations for today's elementary students increase exponentially every year.

It is more important than ever to get the most out of each instructional activity. These timers will help my students by giving them self monitoring tools and reminding the teacher to give the students much needed "Brain Breaks." Thank you for taking the time to read my project. I hope we can work together to help some very deserving young people.
