My Students

“We turn to the Arts when our boundaries of reasoning are tested.” -Alan Gilbert,Music Director of the New York Philharmonic on the 10 year anniversary of 9/11.

Our students are talented, but do not have the means to express and document some of their talents.

The school includes students from grades 7-8 and there are roughly 1000 students who attend our school with a racial and socio-economic profile of: 85% African-American, 10% Hispanic, 3 % Asian and 2% White. According to school data, 93% of students at the school receive Free or Reduced Lunch. Many of our students have attendance issues, and a lack of ability or opportunity to express themselves, leading to truancy, poor test scores, disciplinary issues, and increased dropout rates. We hope to address those issues through this project and give these students a reason to come to school.

My Project

The intention of this project is to create a “songwriters lab” in our school where students can create, practice, and/or record live music. Our lab will allow students to collaborate with their friends or other students in the school on lyrical or musical ideas they have and record their own composition digitally. With this project, the students who may write lyrics, poetry, or raps, who like to make beats, who play instruments, who sing, who want to start a rock band or those who just want to learn how to do those things in real time, will be brought together to let them simply create together using their combined previous knowledge and the collaboration concepts of the music industry. This is a tool that will draw our students in by using what gets our students attention: music and technology.

In the music industry,everyone works together toward a common creative goal, each contributing within their expertise.

This project will inspire that type of teamwork. The instrumentalist who has a melody can collaborate with the lyricist, the rapper and beat maker can collaborate with the bass player to create a hook, and the band with no lead singer can find one. We could see one of these groups on America’s Got Got Talent someday because of the opportunity this lab provided them in school!
