Tabletop Notebook of Important Things to Say

My students need supplies to create a personalized notebook of critical functional picture icons and social stories which support them to indicate need, make requests, and express feelings.

My Students

Imagine not having words to simply ask for a break or express the need for help. Those of us who have speech may take for granted the ease of which we are able to express those basic needs to others.

My students are non-verbal.

They do not have functional speech due to the diagnosis of Autism. They all have desires and needs which are often difficult for them to express in a way that others can understand. My students are learning to exchange pictures for certain messages in the classroom. They become very proud when they successfully indicate a request by handing a picture of "want" or "go" and their listener honors that as a means of communication. With a notebook of these important pictures on the front and social stories in the center, my students are able to have access to their words, just as the rest of us do.

My Project

With the materials I'm requesting, my students will each have a complete notebook of picture icons velcroed on the front which represent the following messages: yes, no, I don't know, I need a break, I need something different, I want, help, wait, go. They will also have a 5 point scale on the side which they can use to indicate either their level of stress or how they are feeling at the moment. Inside of the notebook will include social stories which have been specifically written for them to understand when and how to use the pictures/phrases. These notebooks will become a tool for my students otherwise unable to express the most basic functional message which all human beings should have the right to be able to express. My students will learn to use the notebook as a means of communication. They will be able to carry the notebook around with them and take it to and from school.

Donating to this request is essentially providing the gift of human interaction and connection for students who do not have that ability through the use of verbal speech.

The students will benefit from having a core of basic words as will their listeners, who will be able to respond to the needs of the students. Frustration on both parts, the sending and receiving of messages, will be less for both. The impact this project will have on all involved is unlimited.
