Non-Fiction Needed

My students need 6 copies each of 12 quality non-fiction texts for literature circles.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students struggle to find the same passion with non-fiction that they do with fiction. Sets of exciting history and historical fiction will enable my students to grasp our country's history, and will push them to want more of the same!

The students in my class are mostly second language learners from low-socioeconomic backgrounds attending an inner city elementary school.

Parents often have not graduated from high school, and only one or two have any college education. Their knowledge of US and state history is limited. My kids love books. They participate in literature circles, and often must either share a book, or use a copy of a book, as not enough books exist.

My Project

My students love to read. They love holding books in their hands. New books are like candy. I catch my kids smelling the bindings, and rubbing the smooth covers against cheeks. I read to them daily, and they search our school library and classroom library for books covering the same subject matter. Most of my students have not traveled, and do not have families that share history of the United States with their children. My students read literature together in small groups at a specific comprehension and fluency level. Sets of good non-fiction are rare at my school, and I find myself using either short essays, newspapers or making copies of short pieces of literature. Sets of non-fiction books will further motivate my students to read non-fiction and/or historical fiction.

Funds from this project will forever support my students as readers of multiple genres, rather than forcing them to be dependent on the dwindling supply of what is traditionally provided in school libraries.

My students are so excited to read, to receive new books, to experience the gift of having their own copy of a piece of literature.
